saturday 9: come see about me

Hey guys. Here it is, nearing 9 PM, and I've just remembered it's Saturday and that means it's S9. Maybe I'll get a passing glance, maybe not, but I've got to keep writing (anything! But might as well make it fun!) for writing's sake. I always appreciate those who do visit, though!
*
Looks like we're taking on The Supremes. I'm listening to the song right now - you should, too! What if we had a group called The Superiors? or The Very Best? or the VIPs? Would they rank in for highest in terms of quality? Anyway, if you're playing (late like me) this weekend, be sure and link up here!

Saturday 9: Come See About Me (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Diana Ross sings that she's given up her friends for her boyfriend. Have you ever had a lover your friends disapproved of? Has a friend ever dated someone you didn't care for?

Yes to both! I mean, It happens fairly commonly, I assume, but maybe that's a dumb assumption. I don't think it cost me any friendships that I really wasn't supposed to have, anyway. Like, for the latter, I couldn't stand my roommate's boyfriend, and sometimes exploded after bottling a lot of emotions about that situation (he all but lived with us in our dorm room and wasn't even a student there, but let's not get me started there). The next semester, she was no longer my roommate, and I had our double room to myself. Ohhh, I was so sad.

2) Without her man at her side she feels uncertain. Let's be more positive: what's something you're sure of?

Well, in that same vein, I feel like, as we approach our 25th anniversary "here in a minute" as Rob would say, I can say I'm pretty sure that he's a keeper. Does he have his faults? Ohh yeah, but so do I, and our marriage, of course, hasn't been a model of perfection. At the same time, I think we've found our rhythm, and I'm pretty sure he's the one. This is an actual candle I bought on Etsy and gave to him this past week.

3) When this song was popular, the Supremes were known for their elegant hair and wardrobe. When was the last time you got dressed up?

Well, I'd gotten a couple of dresses ahead of Rob's late-August birthday, which separates Chloë's and then mine by a week. My plan was to take Rob out on a date for his big day, to a traveling dinner: one spot for appetizers, another for mains, and finally a third for desserts. I was really looking forward to it, but it just didn't happen... so the last time I got dressed up was in my bathroom!

4) The Supremes went on to have a dozen #1 hits. This must have been hard for Betty McGlown, the fourth Supreme, who left the group before they recorded their first song. Can you think of an opportunity you missed?

Many, I'm sure. Such as, when I got to college I made an appointment straight away to audition for the 'Canes choir. But then I became very sick with mononucleosis and severe strep throat as soon as classes began, and I was hospitalized for two weeks and sick for a while after that. I had to cancel my audition, and I never rescheduled it. I always wondered what if I had gone? (More like, what if I had been able to go?)

5) After she left the Supremes, lead singer Diana Ross went on to have a successful solo career. But it hasn't always been easy. She stumbled in her high heels and broke her ankle as she left the stage after a November 2012 concert. Have you taken a tumble recently?

Oh yeah, I have a big, painful lump - no, two - on the side of my head from taking a spill and falling against the wall in our main bathroom recently. I'm forever doing that.
Vertigo is but one (major) reason why.

6) Ever the trooper, she honored her commitment to perform at a White House-sponsored Christmas concert just weeks later, even though her leg was still in a cast. Tell us about a time when you "played hurt."

Oh, nothing so major for me. Recently, I was stepping over the baby gate that separates our room from the kids' room and my office, which is there because Paco loves to sneak into my office and poop oh the rug, among other things. He's my naughty little 6½-lb Chihuahua, cute as anything, so it's hard to stay too mad at him:

Paco yawning adorably

Okay, then on this one day, I needed to get a thing or two out of my office and bring it back in here to my bedroom, so I started to climb over the gate instead of taking it down. Only, I'm quite short and that's a big challenge for me, and I was going a little bit faster than I had any business doing, so therefore I failed. My two biggest toes got stuck in two of the top holes of the Connect 4-like pattern of the gate, bending them straight back toward the top of my foot as the gate was yanked out of position and on top of me.

They really should've named me Grace.

7) In 1964, when this song was popular, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was born. What was in your most recent Amazon shipment?

I really have to plead the 5th on that, but I will happily tell you the things coming today if that will soften the blow:

My brown & pink dress for our Christmas pictures tomorrow.

Chloë's top and

bottoms and

shoes for her cute little Christmas photos 'fit.

And this sweet l'il sleep mask that I got for a sweet deal, which will probably end up being used for a stocking stuffer by the it's all said and done!

8) Also in 1964, women still routinely wore white gloves to complete a outfit. Short gloves that ended at the wrist were popular for everyday wear. What fashion trend do you wish would come back?

I love the whole boho, peasant shirt/tunic look, and I just found a whole bunch of these on sale for cheap at Walmart. Heh. Ask me later if I caved. I'd love them with some bellbottoms, round sunglasses, and a beret. Am I a bit much? Or not enough?

9) Random question: If you were in the witness protection program, what new name and occupation would you choose for yourself?

My new name might be Kayleigh Jewell, and I'd be a master knitter teaching classes at shows and festivals around the country - or world? - because... reasons.

Well, it's now three AM on Monday embarrassingly enough, with several (many) sleeps and naps away from where I started. But at least I sat down to start and came back to get it done. If you read all or any of this, thank you! I appreciate you!

xo
